There are about 250 ethnic groups of people inhabiting Nigeria who speak 500 distinct languages and therefore Nigeria is known as a multinational state. All these ethnic groups have different cultures and traditions. Among these ethnic groups, the three largest ethnic groups are Yoruba in the west, the Hausa–Fulani in the north, and Igbo in the east, comprising almost 60% of the total population residing in the country. In order to to provide linguistic unity at the national level English is chosen as the official language of the country. The country is primarily divided into two half between the Christians who live in the southern part of Nigeria and the Muslims in the northern part. Having the fifth largest Muslim population and sixth largest Christian population the country ensures freedom of religion and therefore few minorities also practice indigenous religions such as natives of Igbo and Yoruba.
