The inundations of the Tonle Sap is the most distinctive geographical feature in Cambodia that during the dry season measures about 2,590 square kilometers but during the rainy season it expands to about 24,605 square kilometers. Tonle Sap is considered the heartland of Cambodia and is very good for wet rice cultivation. It has 850 freshwater fish species in the Tonle Sap Lake area, 536 species of birds, 212 mammal species, reptile species estimated to be about 240, and approximately 435 marine fish species. But all these species may be at threat or at the verge of extinction because of the high rate of deforestation in the country. According to the reports, Cambodia’s primary forest cover reduced from 70% in 1969 to only 3.1% in 2007 which is a major environmental issue in the country.
