Tourism in Greenland mainly depends on the flora and fauna biodiversity found in the country as almost 80% of the landmass of the island is covered with thick sheets of ice caps and glaciers. Greenland was declared as an autonomous territory of Denmark in 1979 and it began self-government in 2009. Before this Greenland was a Danish Colony and was ruled by Denmark until 1953. After that, it became a country. The government in Greenland is a constitutional monarchy. It has a unicameral parliament that is called Landsting and a premier with two representatives that are sent to the Danish Folketing and the nominal head of Greenland is a Danish Queen.
