Libya has been a member of the United Nation since 1955, a member of the Arab League since 1953, a member of the Non-Aligned Movement, joined the OIC in 1969 and OPEC in 1962. The Libyan Desert which covers most of the country’s area comprises the eastern and northern parts of the Sahara Desert. Libya is ruled by only one ruler who was King Idris I who ruled from 1951 to 1969. His rule was ended in a coup d etat which was led by Muammar Gaddafi. Gaddafi succeeded King Idris I and ruled for 42 years which was the longest-serving period in Libya. The world knows Gaddafi as a dictatorial leader but during his reign, he served his country very well. During his rule, Libya underwent many reforms which were in favor of the country. Gaddafi worked to improve the health services in the country and Libya became among the best in Africa in health care service. Not only this Gaddafi’s work in education cannot be overlooked as during his reign literacy rate increased from 25% to 87%. Gaddafi was killed by the militia after being tracked down in his hometown.

Libya has the largest proven oil reserve in the continent of Africa. Earlier Libya was among the poorest country in the world but the discovery of oil proved to be a turnover for the country. Libya produces around 1.65 million barrels of oil per day and it is the main export of the country.
Since the large part of the country is covered with desert, it receives very low rainfall not enough for farming, and the soil is also not good for crop production, it has to import 75%- 85% of the food from other countries.
