The dam is very much important for the economy of the country as it is responsible for flood control, electricity generation, shipping, aquaculture, tourism, and irrigation. Before the construction of the dam, its routes were longer because of the water level. After the construction of the dam, the water lever has increased thus resulting in wider and more straight lines so the shipping can be done easily and rapidly. The climate of the river is not very favorable for the population living near the river as it is very much prone to floods in summer.
The rainfall is very high in summers which leads to flooding situations in the river later affecting the areas near the river. As the largest river in Asia itself, the river must contain various types of aquatic bodies. It is said that there are over 400 species of fish in the river. It is normal to do fishing in these types of rivers, but because of overfishing over the years, the government of China has restricted fishing in the river because some of the rare species are getting extinct.
